Gallery Tours and Workshops

Bring your students to the gallery for an active tour that engages students through observation, interaction, creative thinking and a studio component. One and a half hour tours or full day studio programs facilitate an artistic experience tailored to your class’ grade level.

We are located in Deer Lake Park in a heritage building. Field trips can be combined with a visit to the Burnaby Village Museum, or a walk around Deer Lake. Also see our 2010-2011brochure for tour details and booking information.

Artist’s Studio
Mondays / Wednesdays, December 1 – February 2, 2010
Artist’s Studio offers students the chance to explore one artist’s concepts, processes and techniques in detail. In conjunction with the Davida Kidd exhibit, students consider the use of photography and collage to alter meaning and express complex ideas. Kidd’s work questions illusion and reality by combining the mediums of drawing, painting, collage and photo manipulation. Students follow Kidd’s example by combining props and drawings to create and stage scenes. Students document their creations, then use drawing and collage to further alter their imagery. Working with concepts seen in the exhibition, students’ imagery is also inspired by the internal landscape- the dreams and fears of youth.

Printer’s Studio
Mondays / Fridays, February 18- April 8, 2011
Printer’s Studio is an advanced program allowing students to spend an extended time at the gallery. Taught by a professional artist, the focus is on creating a series of prints that explore monoprint and collograph processes. Students spend time discussing and developing imagery in the gallery in response to the works exhibited. Artwork is taken to the next level using printmaking techniques, including additive and subtractive, layering, masking and multiple printing. Students learn how to use a printmaking press, ink and print a plate, and refine their images with different printing arrangements and colours.
