I am inspired by the uniqueness of Chinese painting. Its simple colours, spontaneous brush stokes, subtle balance of shape and space, and expression of nature, join to create a visual poetry. The strength of Chinese painting lies in its rich and ancient technical foundation which, once mastered, allows the artist to spontaneously convey his mental images through painting. The brush stroke techniques emphasize meaning rather than detail of subject matter.

By applying the discipline and knowledge of Chinese painting, I express my love of nature, especially of birds, flowers and landscapes. During my last few years of continual exploration of combining styles and techniques, my work has departed from its initial focus on tradition, to head towards a contemporary appearance. I am seeking to unite Western and Chinese culture in my art, by blending their painting principles and media to represent nature scenes of Canada. I appreciate the freedom of calligraphic expression and the unique properties of rice paper. The paper permits total absorption of the permanent pigments and can be smoothed and wet-mounted onto many different media. The calligraphic brush stroke’s blending of colours reflects light and darkness. I let the spontaneous strokes give expression to images of nature that sift freely through my thoughts.
