Dorothy Haegert, accomplished artist and photographer of Victoria, British Columbia, has presented shows in galleries and museums in Montreal, Victoria, and Seattle. Born in Toronto in 1938, Dorothy went to Victoria in 1945 and later studied at the Vancouver School of Art, the Banff School of Fine Arts and UBC.
She spent five years preparing Children of the First People, a 1979 B.C. Provincial Museum exhibit that served as the basis for a 1983 book of the same name from Randy Fred's Tillicum Library initiative.
“Refrains of France and Italy persist in my latest photo - montages. Children, statuary, ironwork, floor tiles, and cypress trees chant from countryside to city. I see glimpses of the past, like castles in a children’s story. My photography pieces combine toning (sepia or copper), hand colouring, and sometimes paint.
In my painting, I use a multi - layered approach – a complicated yet simple plunge into a personal selection of images, colours, and allusions. I leap to refrains of joyful nuances which are hard to pin down yet hum a distinct tune. These new wanderings into a different media from the photo-montage series of DREAM E-scapes may be spinning some wheel to full circle or following some Spirit Path. Who can say?”
