Artist Statement

Time.

What is a painting to me? I have a camera. I take photographs. I use the images to make a painting. How then does a painting differ from a photograph? For me, the difference is a matter of time.

A photograph is taken in an instant; it is a moment frozen in time. A painting is the sum of the atmosphere and feelings of that moment; a memory of light, sounds, and emotion.

As I work, I think about why I took that photograph, what it was about that scene that appealed to me, what my feelings were on that day. I think and look and in time I get ideas about the painting and what I want to say and slowly it evolves. When looking at the painting, the viewer may understand the feelings around the moment and share some of my pleasure in that particular place. But, just as I took time to paint the painting, the viewer will also need time to absorb what I am trying to say.
