Whenever I am asked, “Why do you paint?” I try to reach back and recreate the experience of being in my studio, unaware of the time of day or the weather outside, alone with the paint, the canvas, and the idea - or the problem. Sometimes, the piece I’m working on feels like a problem to be solved; other times it is a wonderful process which just happens - the painting that paints itself. Often, it starts out as a problem, and if I grapple with it long enough, it “happens.” Those are the times that keep me going back to painting. In any case, it usually seems like just the right place to be, and the best way for me to be spending my time.
My work is quite varied; I enjoy working with different materials, sizes and subjects. At this time, I am using mostly oil on canvas and mixed media collage. I work on small meditative pieces that I can lose myself in, as well as large abstract canvases. I spend a lot of time on nearly every piece - not necessarily “hands - on” - but time looking critically at the piece, leaving it, and then coming back to it. In my studio there are always several unfinished pieces which I turn back to when I need relief from the intensity of starting a new piece.
